Choosing Good Persuasive Essay Topics For 7th Graders

Middle school can be a new experience for many students. Seventh grade can be especially tricky, as you’re no longer fresh to the experience, but you also aren’t at the top of the tier. This is when subjects are most drastically changing and increasing in difficulty. Things are becoming more challenging and teachers are looking to test the way your brain thinks rather than instructing it. This is a great time to practice writing persuasive essays and several middle schoolers learn the ins and outs of writing persuasive papers during this time. If you are a 7th grader looking to select a strong topic, here are ideas that can get you started:

  • What do you know: The point of this type of paper is to convince the reader that your position or stance on a subject is correct. Choose to write about something familiar.

  • Ask a teacher: If your English teacher assigned the paper, meet with them after class and express that you’re having some difficulty deciding on a subject. They will help you begin the brainstorming process and may even share the subjects of past students’ papers. This can inspire you to start thinking of new ideas.

  • Look through your textbook: When in doubt, look at the actual materials you are covering in class; it is most likely that a topic exists somewhere in there. Whether your class is currently reading a novel or learning about a historical event, you can make anything persuasive by deciding on an opinion about it and then sharing it.

  • Go to the library: Search for more inspiration in the rows of your library. Here, you can find other books and articles that are relevant to your studies, and form a unique idea that you feel passionately about.

  • Make sure there are 2 sides: If there is only one side to the subject, there really is no room for an argument. This means that your paper has no depth and is therefore not persuasive. You want to select a subject that can be argued.

These are only the beginning steps to consider when trying selecting a topic. Above all, you want to write about something that you feel strongly about, so whatever idea you consider, be sure to be honest with yourself about how you feel about it, and be sure that you even feel anything.
